Bombay High Court also grants bail to Sushant Singh Rajput’s staff members Dipesh Sawant, Samuel Miranda but bail plea of Showik Chakraborty and Abdul Parihar rejected

After spending nearly a month in judicial custody, Rhea Chakraborty is set to walk out of Byculla jail after the Bombay High Court granted her bail in the NDPS cases in relation to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Chakraborty was charged by the Narcotics Control Bureau under various section of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. A single bench judge of Justice SV. Kotwal also granted bail to Samuel Miranda and Dipesh Sawant – staff members of the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. However, the court rejected the bail applications of other accused, Showik Chakraborty and Abdul Parihar.

Chakraborty’s bail is subject to depositing a PR bond of Rs1 lakh. The court has agreed to her lawyer Satish Maneshinde’s request to give a period of one month to deposit the same. Chakraborty cannot travel out of the country as she will have to submit her passport and she will have to report to the nearest police station once in every ten days. Dipesh Sawant and Samuel Miranda are required to furnish a PR bond of Rs50,000 each.

Appearing for NCB, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh had requested for a stay on the order, but it was rejected by the Bombay High Court. The court had reserved its order after a marathon hearing into the five bail applications on 29 September. In her 47 page application, Chakraborty had denied all the allegations of drug trafficking. The Jalebi [2018] actor had pinned the blame on her late boyfriend, who she claimed used people around him to procure drugs for him. On 6 October, the Special NDPS Court had extended the judicial custody of Chakraborty and all other accused till 20 October. Opposing the bail plea, the NCB has submitted that if set free, Chakraborty could hamper the drug probe and erase possible evidences by alerting the co-conspirators.

While there is relief for Chakraborty, but her brother Showik and other accused Abdul Parihar will continue to remain in judicial custody. The drug probe in relation to the actor’s death has led to big names likes Sara Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone cropping up.

Earlier, a special forensic team of AIl India Institute of Medical Sciences had submitted its report to the CBI wherein it ruled out homicide angle, and concluded that the actor had died by suicide. Vikas Singh, the Rajput family lawyer, wasn’t pleased with the AIIMS report and called for a new team to conduct a fresh forensic report. Rajput was found dead in his Mumbai apartment on 14 June.
