Internationally acclaimed Indian actor Irrfan Khan passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday, 29 April. He was 53. Khan, who had been batting Neuroendocrine cancer over the last 2-3 years, was rushed to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital a few days ago, reportedly due to a colon infection.
Khan’s publicist issued a statement on his passing away at around noon today. The statement read as.
“I trust, i have surrendered”; These were the some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heart felt note he wrote in 2018 opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen. It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away.
Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of a rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, “As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it”.
It’s been a tough last 10 days for the family. Last week, Irrfan Khan’s mother Saeeda Begum [95] had passed away due to age-related illness.
Khan, 53, was one of the few Indian actors to achieve international accalim having starred in films like The Namesake [2006], Slumdog Millionaire [2008], Life of Pi [2012], The Lunchbox [2013], Jurassic World [2015]. Having started his career with television, Khan had gone on to act in over 150 titles. He received much acclaim for his role in marquee films like Maqbool [2003], Charas [2004], Paan Singh Tomar [2012], Talvar [2015], Hindi Medium [2017]. Khan, who has earlier taken treatment in the United Kingdom, had returned to work with Maddock Films’ Angrezi Medium [2020], that released early this year.
Khan is survived by his wife Sutapa and two children.
