They say content is king, and largely content orientated films have done well in the last few years. What needs to be looked at though is how many content-orientated films have opened brightly, especially those films that were led by a female protagonist.
Kangana Ranaut’s Panga [2020] hit the theaters this Friday, The Fox Star Studios film bagged a disappointing Rs2 crore nett on its opening day., as reported by BoxOfficeIndia.com. The producer figure was pegged at Rs2.7 crore nett. That doesn’t really make a difference though as the film has opened poorly. Made at an estimated budget of Rs45 crore, Panga is released in 1450 screens in India and 450 screens overseas.
A few weeks ago, Deepika Padukone’s Chhapaak [2020], too, failed to make much of an impression at the box office. The film was shrouded in legal suits, controversies, and it opened to Rs4.46 crore nett. Chhapaak has so far bagged Rs30.71 crore nett Chhapaak, too, is made at a budget of Rs45 crore.
As opposed to Chhapaak, Panga had a smooth release. What is likely to work in favour of Panga is the largely positive reviews. Kangana Ranaut and Fox Star Studios would hope that the strong word of mouth will lift Panga over the weekend. Both films are Fox Star Studios productions.
T-Series produced Street Dancer 3D [2020] had an average opening of Rs9.50 crore nett. The Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor-starrer.has released in 3700 screens in India and is made at an estimated budget of Rs95 crore. For such a wide release and huge budget, Street Dancer 3D’s opening day number are not so encouraging. The mixed reviews are not likely to help its cause.
Meanwhile, holdover release Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior [2020] bagged an impressive Rs4.75 crore nett on its third Friday. The film is a huge hit already as it has so far bagged Rs197 .28 crore nett.
