Star Screen Awards 2019: Top honours for Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and Gully Boy

Critics awards for Article 15, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Saand Ki Aankh lead actresses – Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu

The popular Star Screen Awards 2019 took place in Mumbai last evening.  Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt and director Zoya Akhtar bagged the top honours for their underdog drama Gully Boy.

Ranveer Singh was the firm favorite and it was no surprise to see him win the Best Actor (Popular] award.   He also won the Entertainer of the Year award.

Gosh! Double Whammy! ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ for #GullyBoy & ‘Entertainer of the Year’ at the #StarScreenAwardsm,” Singh tweeted later.

Alia Bhatt was good but there were perhaps more strong contenders, but she swooped the Best Actress award (popular).

“Thank you #starscreenawards2019 for showering Safeena with so much love I am so so happy to share this achievement with you @RanveerOfficial #ZoyaAkhtar @kagtireema @excelmovies @tigerbabyindia & the #GullyBoy team. Apna time aa gaya,” tweeted Bhatt.

Zoya Akhtar won the Best Director’s award as Gully Boy also picked the Best Film (popular) award. Gully Boy that premiered at the Berlin International Festival, is also India’s official representation to the Oscars.  First time actor Siddhant Chaturvedi picked the Most Promising newcomer (male) award. The film won the Best Cinematography (for Jay Oza) award and it also shared the Best Music honours with Shahid’s Kapoor’s Kabir Singh.

In the critics category, Anubhav Sinha’s hard hitting social crime drama Article 15 won the Best Film and Best Director’s award.  Its lead actor Ayushmann Khurrana won the Best Actor (Critics) award.  Article 15 also bagged the Best Story [Screenwriting] award.

In the supporting cast category, Gulshan Devaiah won the award for Best Actor for his double roles in the critically acclaimed Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota.  Meanwhile, veteran actress Kamini Kaushal won the award for Best Actress in a supporting role for Kabir Singh.

There was an award for Yami Gautam, too, as she picked the Best Actor in a comic role award for Bala.  Gautam thanked director Amar Kaushik.

Sara Ali Khan picked the most promising actress award for Kedarnath and Simmba. Both films had released in December 2018. The Star Screen Award calendar perhaps covers films from  December to November, and so both Kedarnath and Simmba were considered for 2019 awards.

Uri : The Surgical Strike filmmaker Aditya Dhar won the Most promising director honour.  There was a special honour for Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon-starrer Luka Chuppi that was given the Baat Nayi award. Aaryan hosted the awards.

Hrihik Roshan was nominated for Best Actor for Super 30 but he got none for it. Roshan’s War though picked the Best Action award and the Best Choreography for the Ghungroo song.

Veteran actor Prem Chopra received the Lifetime Achievement award.

The Star Screen Award would be telecast later.
